“In Fifty words or less.”
I consider myself to be a good writer but I definitely feel my weakness is lack of conciseness. When I proof read most of my material, I often find a complete thought expressed multiple times. Ability to provide high density information in a limited amount of words requires skill. When giving brief identifications, showing contrast in writing and explaining cause/effect in a small space it is very important to be detailed but “direct”. This chapter discussed the importance of providing vital information in small spaces.
Many students are very familiar with formal writing such as essays and reports. Sometimes our writing is tested by being able to provide information in a less formal document while somewhat restricted by the amount of words one may use. Understanding what information to provide for the audience is the key to success when writing a Brief Bio. I think some of the Key Words naturally come to mind when a writer has knowledge of its subject; however I was very impressed with the texts section on Connectors. Connectors are very powerful short phrases that will allow a writer to go into detail after presenting the subject of a short paragraph.
As an educator I would stress that mastery of tools such as Connectors in writing will allow them to be successful at any type of writing. As a student I was never introduced to this strategy. I think this is the perfect strategy students can use to gain an interest in becoming better writers. Many of today’s students like to do things fast. My personal observation and research leads me to believe that some of my students will have short attention spans and other deficits, so I plan to rely heavily on quick but effective strategies in writing. Providing a useful tool for a student to refer to depending on the circumstances of the writing, just makes more sense for me to focus on, especially with a special needs population.
